What makes a replacement window energy efficient
Four parts do the work, and a quote that names them is a quote you can compare. Low-E glass carries a microscopically thin metal oxide coating that reflects heat back to the side it came from, so winter heat stays inside and summer heat stays out. Insulated glazing means two or three panes sealed with a gap between them; that gap is the insulation. Argon gas fill replaces the air in that gap with a denser gas that slows heat transfer. The frame finishes the job: vinyl, fiberglass and composite frames do not conduct heat the way old aluminum frames do.
Two numbers on the NFRC label tell you how well those parts perform. U-factor measures how much heat escapes through the whole window, and lower is better. Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) measures how much of the sun’s heat comes through, and for a Pennsylvania home a moderate number helps in January and stays manageable in July. Every window we install carries the NFRC label, and your estimator walks you through both numbers before you sign anything.
ENERGY STAR ratings for our climate zone
ENERGY STAR sorts the country into four climate zones and sets a different U-factor limit for each. Bucks County, Montgomery County, Chester County and Philadelphia are in the North-Central zone, where a certified window must have a U-factor of 0.25 or lower, per the ENERGY STAR climate zone finder [ENERGY STAR Version 7.0 county list, verified 2026-09-02]. Lehigh County and the Poconos sit in the stricter Northern zone at 0.22. If a quote does not state the U-factor, ask for it.

What that is worth on the bill: ENERGY STAR’s own estimate is a saving of $125 to $340 a year when you replace single pane windows, and $20 to $70 a year over clear glass double pane windows, with an average of up to 13 percent off heating and cooling costs nationwide, per the ENERGY STAR windows program [verified 2026-09-02]. Savings vary by home, and a drafty 1970s colonial in Doylestown will see more than a 2015 build in Blue Bell.
Signs your current windows are costing you money
- Drafts you can feel. Hold a hand near the sash on a windy day. Moving air means failed weatherstripping or a frame that has pulled away from the opening.
- Fog or water between the panes. The seal has failed and the insulating gas is gone. That window is now a single pane window with extra glass.
- Frost or condensation on the inside glass. The interior surface is cold enough to condense room moisture, which is exactly what Low-E glass prevents.
- Rooms that will not hold a temperature. If the thermostat says 70 and the room by the window says 62, the window is the leak.
- Single pane or aluminum framed windows. Common on homes built before the mid 1980s, and the biggest energy gap you can close in one project.
Two or three of these on the list usually means the whole set is at the end of its life, which is why we scope replacement windows as a whole home project. Our winter readiness checklist walks through the same checks room by room.
Energy efficient window brands we install
We are an Andersen Certified Contractor, which means our installers are trained to fit Andersen windows correctly so you get the thermal performance and the warranty the window was built for. Andersen’s 100 Series uses its Fibrex composite frame and the 400 Series uses wood protected by a vinyl exterior; both are offered with Low-E4 glass options that meet the North-Central limit. For vinyl and fiberglass energy efficient windows we also install Harvey, Vytex, ProVia and OKNA, so the estimate can show you two or three price points that all clear the same efficiency bar.

What energy efficient replacement windows cost here
At HomeTrust the average runs $300 to $1,200 per window installed, depending on style, frame material and glass package. Standard double pane vinyl windows with Low-E glass run $300 to $800 each, premium fiberglass and composite options reach $1,200, and Andersen units run $600 to $1,200 each depending on series and features. A 15 window home typically lands between $6,750 and $18,000. Triple pane glass adds to the price and pays back slowest in our climate, so we usually recommend a strong double pane Low-E package with argon fill for North-Central zone homes and reserve triple pane for rooms facing a highway or a north wind.
Whole home replacement costs less per opening than piecing it out, and that is how we work: HomeTrust does not take single window jobs. Late fall and winter are usually the least expensive months to buy. If timing is the obstacle rather than the price, we offer financing options including a 0 percent plan. Full pricing detail for every style is on our premium replacement windows page.
Tax credits and rebates for new windows in 2026, the honest version
The federal 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit that paid 30 percent of window cost up to $600 a year ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025, per the IRS [verified 2026-09-02]. Windows installed in 2026 do not qualify, and any company still advertising a 30 percent federal window credit is quoting a program that no longer exists. If your windows went in during 2025, you can still claim it on your 2025 return; call us and we will pull your manufacturer paperwork.
Utility programs change through the year, so we check the current PECO and state program terms before every quote instead of printing a number that goes stale. The full history and what still applies is in our 2026 window tax credit guide. The savings that do not expire are the ones on your heating bill, and the ENERGY STAR range above is where to start that math.

Frequently asked questions
What is Low-E glass and how does it save energy?
Low-E stands for low emissivity. The glass carries a thin, invisible metal oxide coating that reflects radiant heat instead of absorbing it, so heat from your furnace stays inside in winter and heat from the sun stays outside in summer. It also blocks most of the UV light that fades floors and furniture.
Is Low-E glass worth the extra cost?
For a home in the North-Central zone, yes. Low-E glass is what gets a double pane window under the North-Central U-factor limit of 0.25, and it is a small share of the installed price. Every window HomeTrust installs comes with a Low-E option, and most of our customers choose it on every opening.
How much do energy efficient replacement windows cost in Pennsylvania?
At HomeTrust the average is $300 to $1,200 per window installed. Standard double pane vinyl windows with Low-E glass run $300 to $800 each, and Andersen units run $600 to $1,200 each depending on series and features. A 15 window project typically lands between $6,750 and $18,000.
What is the difference between double pane and triple pane windows?
A double pane window has two sheets of glass with one insulating gap; a triple pane window has three sheets and two gaps, so it insulates and quiets a room better but costs and weighs more. In the North-Central climate zone a good double pane Low-E window with argon fill meets the ENERGY STAR limit, so we usually reserve triple pane for rooms facing heavy traffic noise or a north wind.
Is there still a tax credit for replacement windows in 2026?
No. The federal 25C credit ended for windows placed in service after December 31, 2025, according to the IRS. Windows installed in 2025 can still be claimed on a 2025 return. We check current utility programs before every quote.
What ENERGY STAR climate zone are we in?
Both counties are in the North-Central climate zone, along with Chester County and Philadelphia. A certified window there needs a U-factor of 0.25 or lower. Lehigh County and the Poconos are in the Northern zone, where the limit is 0.22.
Will you replace just one drafty window?
No. HomeTrust does not take single window jobs. Every project is scoped whole home or whole project, which also keeps the per window price lower. The one exception is a failing bow window, which we will come out and look at on its own.
